DIGITAL ALEXANDERLIED

Project

Within the Projects of Excellence (2017-2022 and 2023-2027) of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature of the University of Verona, the DAL (Digital Alexanderlied) research group (PI: Maria Adele Cipolla, academic field GERM-01/A – Germanic Philology and Linguistics) intends to create a digital scholarly edition (DSE) of the whole manuscript tradition of the so-called Alexanderlied. It is a Middle-High-German poem belonging to the transnational literary tradition concerning Alexander the Great and it is handed down in 3 redactions (V, S, B) that highly differ in language, content, and style.

The first goal of the project is the creation of three separate, digital scholarly editions of the redactions. The DSEs are document-oriented, and they will include a facsimile of the manuscript (in the case of S, whose manuscript was destroyed, images from an early printed edition with handwritten codicological and paleographical annotations replace the facsimile) and different editorial levels (diplomatic, semi-diplomatic, critical). These DSEs will be document-oriented and EVT (Edition Visualization Technology) in its 2.0 version (http://evt.labcd.unipi.it/) is the visualization software chosen for their realization.

The second and last objective is the realization of a digital synoptic edition of the three critical texts, facilitating a comparison between the redactions.
